Yoyo Nagase on his song "i don't care."

New release as of 2022

We love to discover new music and are so happy we stumbled across this gem. We asked Yoyo Nagase a few short questions about his song "i don't care". Here's what he had to say about it..

What inspired this song?

"First of all, thanks so much for having me! I really can’t wait for this song “i don’t care.” by Yoyo Nagase, Pluto Koi, a kid named rufus, pretty havoc. and produced by Axel Hejslberg to come out. The song’s inspiration came from the idea that I overthink everything. For instance, I sometimes replay conversations in my head months after it happened. My constant overthinking issue relates to this song because I had a hard time deciding what to use as the chorus lyrics. I was in the studio with my incredible producer Axel Hejlsberg in New York, and I didn’t know how I would finish the chorus. Initially, when we were creating the song demo, I sang using the filler word “la” instead of actually having to write down any lyrics. Later in that session, Axel was like “what if we just kept it as “la’s”?”. I think that simple question completely changed the trajectory of the song. Once that idea was established, everything else came pretty naturally. Of course with so many artists from such different backgrounds on the song, there were creative differences. However, we were able to resolve them into a project that I am super excited to share with everyone!"..

What do you hope the listener takes away from the song?

"Something that is really important to me is promoting Asian voices in Western pop. My Asian identity is very important to me – my mom grew up in Taipei, and my dad grew up in a rural prefecture of Japan called Toyama. Over the years, I have learned so much about their childhoods, cultures, and lifestyles, and thus have developed very similar values as them. Hopefully through the different followings of all four of us, our project is able to inspire the next generation of Asian artists! Aside from the background of the song, I hope that the listener finds the many different elements of the song compelling. Each one of the four artists comes from a different background genre-wise. The first artist, Pluto Koi, has a very pretty soft pop sound. After the chorus, the energy begins to pick up with a catchy indie pop verse by a kid named rufus. The last verse is a high energy alternative verse by pretty havoc. The final chorus features a beautiful saxophone that takes the song to a completely new level. I hope that the listeners love the different genres they experience as they listen to the song"..

What can we expect next from you?

"I have been really busy working to promote “i don’t care.” before it comes out on September 16th! Producer Axel Hejslberg and I have some other projects in the works that I am also very excited to share. People can find me at Yoyo Nagase on Spotify and @YoyoNagase on Instagram."
