Meet Sam Purpose

Sam breaks down his artistry and what's next to come..

Sam Purpose

We love to discover new christian creatives and are so happy we had a chance to interview this artist. We asked Sam a few short questions about his artistry and what to expect next. Here's what he had to say..

Every artist has a unique story. Can you tell us a little about yours?

"I starting writing hip hop music when I was 9 years old after the death of my father and lost my home in a house fire. I initially got my inspiration to write music from Nas, Biggie, and Big Pun. I would read dictionaries and thesauruses to help increase my vocabulary and rhyming ability. I discovered CHH from a friend of mine in 2009 but did not feel led to start a career as an artist until 2015. I gave my life to Christ in 2005 and did know what to do so when I went off to college I fell right back into sexual sin to a point I got academically suspended from school at UNC-Greensboro. After committing myself to say serious with my relationship with Christ I got an appeal to go back to school, found a group of committed brothers and sisters on the same journey, and was able to finish college. I met my wife there and we now have 3 beautiful children together and 15 years of marriage.."..

Please tell us about your art. What do you do / make / create? How? Why? What’s the message or inspiration, what do you hope people take away from it?

"I create hip-hop music specifically encouraging both non-believers and believers to pursue their God-given purpose in the midst of life's trials and tribulations. Most importantly my music is centered around Jesus being the focus in your life, family, relationships, and career. I talk about life aspects such as marriage, mental health, depression, fear, anxiety and how to be honest about the things that keep us bound and how to submit those things up under the hand of the Lord Jesus Christ. The main thing people can take away from my music is that God does not want you to attempt to clean yourself before you come to him yet with all your flaws continue to pursue a relationship with him."..

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?

"My music is available on a digital streaming platforms under the artist name Sam Purpose and my website sampurposemusic.com. The best way to support me is to make donations at sampurposemusic.com/links and hit the donate tab. Also to stream and save my music on your preferred music streaming service. That can also sign up for my email community"..

When and why did you start playing/making music?

"I started creating music when I was 9 years old because I loved the sound of hip hop music and I loved the art of rap. The creativity and lyrical cadences, punchlines, and compound rhymes amaze me and I wanted to learn how to perfect the art of rhyming. When I started taking music seriously in 2015 I was inspired by artist like Jerry Blackwell, Trip Lee, DA TRUTH (Emanuel), Andy Mineo, and Bizzle to create music to transform the lives of men and introduce them to a relationship with Jesus Christ.."..

Tell us a little about your faith journey and how you came to give your life to Jesus?

"I gave my life to Jesus Christ after having pre-martial sex the night before with an ex-girlfriend. Her family invited to a church in Louisburg North Carolina and I gave my life to Jesus that day. After I still struggled with having pre-martial sex and it was not until I moved to Greensboro to attend UNC-Greensboro in 2006 that I would take my relationship with Christ more seriously after getting academically suspended for not attending class. I told the Lord if he would allow me to get back into school I would serve him. I got back into school when I appealed in 2007 and in the fall met a group of college students in a bible study called YTC which stands for youth taking charge. I hung around them for the remainder of my college years and found a church home where they were. From that point I have been committed to Jesus Christ.."..

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

"I was an after school teacher for about eight years and I worked as a ramp agent for a couple of aviation services and worked in warehousing."..

How do you balance your music with other obligations - significant other, children, job etc? Are you full time music?

"The best way I have learned to do that is to keep the main things important in my life which is to live listening to the Holy Spirit because without that I probably would just quit music. I am not full time in music I work about 30 hours a week at the Amazon warehouse and I spend Friday Saturday and Sunday evenings with my wife and kids. Every season is not the same sometimes I have more time to create and work on music, content, etc and some seasons I have less time but I make the most of the time that I have and seen God create opportunities with less promo and music creation. I believe when you operate out of a sincere heart to do the will of the Lord he will grant you the things you desire."..

What advice would you give up and coming independent artists?

"Learn and invest in understanding the music business while you create. Have a spending plan for your household first then create one for your music business even if it is just 20 dollars. For artist who publicly claim the Christian faith I suggest that they get connected to a local body, build meaningful relationship there, and serve. Have a consistent prayer life to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and do everything I just named above after.."..

Do you plan to stay independent as an artist? What's the next move?

"I plan to stay independent for the rest of my music career my next focus is to work on building relationship with music supervisors, and libraries to get placements for TV and film"..

What can we expect next from you?

"I have been working on my 5th studio album and more single leading up to that"
