Meet Inherited

Inherited breaks down her artistry and what's next to come..

Briana Shelton aka "Inherited" Christian Music Artist

We love to discover new christian creatives and are so happy we had a chance to interview this artist. We asked Inherited a few short questions about her artistry and what to expect next. Here's what she had to say..

Every artist has a unique story. Can you tell us a little about yours?

"I have had a really rough life but have always had a creative side. In 2019, God gave me a vision of some t shirt ideas and I wrote them down thinking that I would share them with someone else who was capable of making them into something. I counted myself out before I even got started. I went to a friends bible study and her message was that if God gave YOU a vision He expects YOU to bring it forth and that message touched me. After that I started on my journey to try to make the t shirt ideas into reality. I spent over a year learning how to screen print and I was able to start my own brand at home. Later on, God instructed me to use my raps as a way to promote my clothing."..

Please tell us about your art. What do you do / make / create? How? Why? What’s the message or inspiration, what do you hope people take away from it?

"My ministry is called Inherited. The vision for it is to spread awareness of the Gospel and our place in God's kingdom as His inherited children. Ultimately I try to motivate people to be who God called them to be and to use their gifts and talents the way He intended. I think that some people can be afraid to be who God called them to be because its scary or doesnt look like how "normal church people" look. But God is multifaceted and we cant put Him in a box. So I do this by making music and making clothes and sharing my testimony of being different."..

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?

"People can see my work on instagram @musicfortheinherited and they can see my clothing on my website beinherited.com I make all of my clothing by hand and they are all my own original designs that spreads the Gospel. People can support by listening to my music on all streaming platforms and purchasing my merch to represent the Kingdom!"..

When and why did you start playing/making music?

"I used to sing in church when I was little. My sister, cousin, and I had a little girl group also and we wrote our own r&b songs. I didn't start doing Christian rap until 2020. I had lyrics that were coming to me and they were really powerful so I knew I had to make something out of them."..

Tell us a little about your faith journey and how you came to give your life to Jesus?

"I was raised in church but had never read the bible for myself. When I was 21 years old I heard the Lord calling me to read His word. I had a really strong desire to read the bible. When I finally did, I was blown away! I couldn't believe how personal the Gospel was and all the different stories of Gods power. The verse that kicked off my faith journey was James 5:16 which says " confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed" I had some really heavy stuff that I was carrying that I needed to confess and once I did, I experienced a major shift in my life."..

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

"Ive had several different jobs in my life. I graduated college with a BA in Anthropology and I was previously a first grade tutor. I have also worked in post production in Hollywood and now I currently work at a casino. I hope to one day do archaeology and explore different cultures."..

How do you balance your music with other obligations - significant other, children, job etc? Are you full time music?

"I do music part time right now. I just do what I can handle. I make sure to stay in alignment with God and not take on any tasks that He hasn't graced me to take on. It can still be overwhelming sometimes because I'm the writer and engineer for my music but I enjoy the work so its all worth it."..

What advice would you give up and coming independent artists?

"Don't feel rushed to do anything. If you feel content making music that satisfies you don't worry about what people say about your art. Just do you!"..

Are you planning on staying independent as an artist? What's the next move?

"I plan to stay independent and hopefully start my own label."..

What can we expect next from you?

"You can expect more music as well fashion show for my clothing brand"

What's your writing process look like? Tell us more about how you create!

"Writing music is a stress outlet for me mostly. I like to express myself through the songs while still circling everything back to God. My world revolves around Him so I like to show that in any circumstance I can still bring God into it. On the other hand I know that God uses me to share certain messages in my songs so I don’t force anything and I move with the Spirit when it’s time to create."..

What inspired your most recent EP "Calling On Him"?

"I went through an extremely rough time at the beginning of 2024. I was overwhelmed with spiritual attacks and hit rock bottom. I felt like I had no one but God during that season and He let me know He was right there with me. This new project Calling on Him is dedicated to Him always being there for me. It’s like He’s one call away. No matter how tough things get - or good they get, He will always be there for me. He’s whatever I need Him to be in any season. To me, that’s the true love of God. "..
